We recently caught up with Graduate Jake Alexander to talk about his illustrative work and winning entry to The Macmillan Prize 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Creative Process<\/h3>\n

Jake starts his process by working with good old fashioned pen and paper! He creates loose thumbnail sketches so he can think about the composition, scale, hierarchy & perspective in a piece of work. It’s  important to understand these artistic principles when developing illustrative work.<\/p>\n

After drawing initial thumbnails he takes these sketches into ProCreate which is the tool he spends most of his time working in. It’s also one of the leading creative apps for the iPad pro and well worth downloading.<\/p>\n

Before having an iPad Alex worked in Photoshop and used a graphics tablet to draw with. He occasionally still uses this set up for formatting or to make more complex adjustments.<\/p>\n

His final illustrations are made up of many layers of shapes and mark making. If you look closely at the images below you can see the marks and brush strokes which make up the image, pretty cool!<\/p>\n

“Constraints are really useful when you are working.”<\/em><\/h3>\n

Jake developed his distinctive style by picking apart lots of illustrators creative work and was inspired by at all sorts of people from contemporary illustrators like Jon Klassen<\/a> to traditional artists like John Singer Sargent<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He also uses sites like Pinterest for research and to find visual inspiration especially towards the beginning of a project. Find out more about how he developed his visual style and language in the full video interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These paintings are by <\/em>John Singer Sargent.<\/em><\/p>\n

He has been heavily inspired by the way other artists make marks and work within constraints and has explored this in his own work using the iPad pro.<\/p>\n

Illustrators are constantly exploring new ways of working, using new materials, social topics and interests. All of these factors have a massive impact on the style of their work. <\/p>\n

The Macmillan Competition<\/h4>\n

The Macmillan Prize For Children’s Picture Book Illustration was established by Macmillan Children\u2019s Books to support new and upcoming illustrators from art schools.<\/p>\n

Alex submitted his 32 page picture book about systemic racism. Which he created for his final project at University.<\/p>\n

He won the first place and explained that he never expected to win because he had never worked on this kind of project before!<\/p>\n
